Meaning & origin

(measured from records)

Típusa: Helynévi eredetű, magyar családnév. Eredete: A Tur településnevek keletkezésére több véleményt ismerünk. Egyik szerint a valószínűleg ószláv eredetű, ’őstulok’ jelentésű tur szó rejlik több magyarországi pataknévben, mivel a partján, környékén vadon éltek ezek az állatok. A patakról a melléjük épült település neve is Tur lett. A másik nézet szerint személynévből lett településnév. Az ótörök nyelvekben a Dur ~ Tur ’Állj!, Maradj (velünk)!, Élj (soká)!’ jelentésű személynév igen gyakori volt, és minden bizonnyal bekerült a magyar névkincsbe is. Az Árpád-korban több Tor, Torcha, Torka, Turc, Turk, Turda, Torda; Durs, Dursa, Dursi stb. névalakot találni. Ezek magyar névadással (minden végződés vagy összetétel nélkül) váltak településnévvé Fejér, Külső-Szolnok, Somogy, Szatmár, Tolna, Torda, Trencsén, Zala vármegyében. Bármiképp is alakultak a településnevek, ezekhez ’onnan/oda való’ jelentésű magyar -i képző járult, és eredetre, származási helyre utaló családnév lett belőlük. Elterjedtsége: A Dunántúl északnyugati részén gyakoribb.

About this data

measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated

These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.

Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.

Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
